About Axel Center
Pioneer in digital mental health research
An initiative born out of research
Founded in 2018 by researchers Stéphane Guay and Isabelle Ouellet-Morin, the Axel Center was created within the Research Center of the Montreal Mental Health University Institute (CR-IUSMM) with a clear objective: to mobilize expertise in digital technologies and mental health to better support clinicians, patients, the general public, and researchers.
From the outset, the Center has focused on the potential of digital technologies to:
- provide clinicians with scientifically validated diagnostic tools and real-time monitoring solutions;
- promote patient and population autonomy in terms of prevention and access to services;
- equip researchers with agile partnerships and cutting-edge technologies.
This approach has led to the creation or expansion of several digital mental health tools, such as the +Fort mobile app, designed by researcher Isabelle Ouellet-Morin, and Avatar therapy, designed by researchers Alexandre Dumais and Stéphane Potvin.
The Axel Center has quickly established itself as a pioneer in digital innovation in mental health in Quebec and beyond. Its role is to develop innovative and scientifically validated digital solutions in mental health.

A vision shared with government authorities
In February 2020, a few weeks before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Axel Center (with the support of the CIUSSS EMTL’s senior management) presented Minister Lionel Carmant with a Quebec strategy for access to new technologies for mental health. The strategy aimed to:
- Improve access to mental health care;
- Promote the integration of technologies into the health care system.
This vision became a reality in June 2020 with the promotion of the tool Aller mieux à ma façon (Getting Better My Way), designed by researcher Janie Houle to support the population in coping with anxiety and depression during the pandemic.
This partnership led to the integration of a digital mental health strategy into the 2022–2026 Interministerial Action Plan, accompanied by $12 million in funding to create the Centre d’expertise en technologie de l’information – Santé mentale, dépendance, itinérance (CETI-SMDI), led by the CIUSSS EMTL and deployed province-wide.
The CETI-SMDI now plays a major role in deploying validated digital mental health solutions across the healthcare network.

Getting better... my way
Getting Better… My Way (Aller mieux.. à ma façon) is a self-management support tool that can help you regain balance and feel good again. Available free of charge, this tool helps you identify ways to get better and take care of your health. It was originally developed to help people experiencing difficulties related to anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.
Getting Better… My Way is now an informational asset of the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). It is managed and operated by the Center for Expertise in Information Technology – Mental Health, Addiction, and Homelessness (CETI-SMDI).

A new era for the Axel Center
Since 2022, the Axel Center has gradually refocused its activities on supporting digital innovation in mental health. As a strategic platform for the CR-IUSMM, it has implemented:
- a support process for the development of innovations in digital mental health;
- a course in digital mental health for residents in psychiatry and addiction medicine at the University of Montreal;
- a strategic partnership with IVADO and the University of Montreal’s Neuroscience and Mental Health Strategy.
In 2024, the Axel Center team was strengthened with the arrival of:
- Stéphane Vial, a researcher specializing in digital mental health design, founder of the Mentallys platform, and co-director of the Axel Center until June 2025;
- Marc Lanovaz, a researcher specializing in digital tools for people with autism or intellectual disabilities, responsible for technology platforms for the Axel Center;
- Johana Monthuy-Blanc, researcher specializing in the use of virtual reality for eating disorders, new director of the Axel Center starting in June 2025.
With this new team and expanded vision, the Axel Center now defines itself as a facilitator of digital innovations for mental health research and care, serving the CR-IUSMM and the Quebec Mental Health Alliance.
